Summer Courses 2010

accompanying fee to guarantee your place on the course. 

The Centre will be closed from Monday, 26th July  and will reopen on Monday, 9th August 2010.


 

Music Making from Scratch through Samba Drumming and Percussion

Participants will be using pulse, tempo, tones, prepared instruments, home made instruments, the human voice and the human body.  Background will be given on the use of percussion on a local and global scale.  The group will learn concentrating/focusing techniques, ways of exploring individuality in musical expression as well as experiencing first hand ensemble music-making and the many elements surrounding performance and continually exploring the element of self esteem through personal achievement.  All participants will develop new skills enabling them to instigate active music-making in their class/school.  The course will provide opportunities for the understanding of listening, performing and composing in the world of music.

The Leadership Role of the Primary Principal

This course aims to assist principals as they cope with a rapidly changing and developing role.  There will be opportunities to sharpen existing skills, learn new skills and to discuss various good practices.

Topics include: Leadership, managing special needs, team building, in-school management, goal setting, planning and emerging issues.

Aquatics, Water Safety and Basic Life Support

This course aims to provide teachers with the skills to enable them to implement aquatics and other elements of the Physical Education Primary School Curriculum (1999), to train teachers in all aspects of swimming, water safety and resuscitation appropriate to their abilities, to provide them with expertise that can be shared with colleagues and pupils, to enhance their swimming, resuscitation and personal safety skills and, by extension, that of their pupils and to increase schools’ involvement in swimming and water safety.  The course is practical and is organised in collaboration with Irish Water Safety (IWS).  IWS certification is awarded.

Topics include: swimming instruction and participation, lifestyle skills instruction, resuscitation, theory and practice, aquatics games, safety.

Dates:   Course 2: 23 – 27 August 2010
Time:      09.30 – 14.45 (Registration on first day at 09.15)
Venue: Stewarts School/Sports Complex, Palmerstown, Dublin 20
