Computer maintenance and useful applications for creating teaching resources (NCTE/T4)

The aim of the "Computer maintenance and useful applications for creating teaching resources" course is to enable teachers to develop their own teaching resources to meet their own particular needs. Designed by T4 in collaboration with NCTE for the post primary Design and Communication Graphics and Technology syllabuses, this course has relevance to teachers in the primary sector also.

The course will demonstrate how a number of IT applications can be integrated to produce interactive resources to suit the individual learning styles of their students.  As teachers use a desktop/laptop as a teaching tool, the basic maintenance and care of this hardware will also be an aspect of this course

Duration: The course is modular, 2.50 hours duration (10.00 hours in total, a 5th session may be added if required)
Venue: Dublin West Education
Dates: Tuesdays 27th March, 3rd, 17th and 24th April 2012
Times: 6.30-9.00pm

Prerequisites:
Participants should have basic ICT skills and have some experience of using the Internet.

Target Audience:
While originally designed for post primary teachers of technology subjects, in particular teachers of Design and Communications Graphics and Technology, the course is also of interest and relevant to primary teachers.

Course Content:
Unit 1 - Basic maintenance and care of desktop/laptop computers
While it is not feasible for teachers to maintain the computer hardware, it is feasible for them to maintain the system and application software. Computers get slower over time.  This is due to a combination of factors, all software related.  With regular maintenance, it is possible to keep computers running at their optimal speed.  This unit will deal with issues such as storage maintenance, scheduled tasks, disk imaging and malware.

Unit 2: Creating worksheets using MS Word 2007
This unit will deal with creating worksheets using MS Word.  A number of other applications will be used in the creation of the material such as SolidWorks and image capturing software.  Converting worksheets to Portable Document Format (pdf) using freeware where appropriate will also be addressed.

Unit 3: Creating worksheets using MS Publisher 2007
Microsoft Publisher gives you the opportunity to combine images, graphics and text in ways that will suit the production of most worksheets for the technology subjects. It is also a useful application for the production of design portfolios, reports, etc.

As places are limited early booking is advised. There is a deposit of €10.00, refundable on completion of course.

Scratch Courses for Teachers

Dates: Saturdays 3rd and 10th March 2012
Time: 9.30am – 3.30pm

Scratch is a programming language that makes it easy to create your own interactive stories, animations, games, music, and art -- and share your creations on the web.

As young people create and share Scratch projects, they learn important mathematical and computational ideas, while also learning to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively.

The Computer Education Society of Ireland (CESI) and Lero - the Irish Software Engineering Research Centre are engaging in an initiative to develop and roll out teacher training in the use of Scratch (a visual programming language) in the classroom, funded by the National Centre for Technology in Education (NCTE).

The course is scheduled to run on two Saturdays – 3rd and 10th March in Dublin West Education Centre.  Each course will be lead by a teacher practitioner, who will indicate approaches used in class. Course Content:

  • Day 1 will be devoted to mastering the basic programming steps and control blocks. This will culminate with each participant creating an interactive game.
After the first day’s input, participants would have a fortnight to apply what they had learned and to complete a few programmes/games of their own.
  • Day 2 will be devoted to a “show and tell session”, troubleshooting and a workshop on how Scratch could be used within each participant’s school and how they might form a local support group/cluster.
Some potential of Scratch is indicated at the website www.scratch.ie

Target Audience: The course is aimed at all primary and post primary teachers interested in using ICT to promote learning in their classroom.

Pre-requisites: While no programming experience is required, it is expected that all participants possess basic computer and keyboarding skills.
