ICT Autumn Courses 2010

Dublin West Education Centre in conjunction with the NCTE will host a number of ICT courses as part of our Autumn Course programme.

Computers for the Terrified

Dates: Tuesday 14th, 21st & 28th September, 5th, 12th & 19th October.

This course will help you to:

  • Overcome any apprehension you may still have of using computers
  • Develop confidence in the use of information and communications technology
  • Have an awareness of the potential educational value of using information and communications technology in the classroom
  • Become familiar with using a word processing package
  • Learn about  the different types of educational software available and of its use in the classroom
  • Have an awareness of the potential of the Internet and E-Mail in the classroom and beyond
  • Become familiar with ‘browsing’ the World Wide Web
  • Become familiar with the Data Protection Act

Project Maths

Project Maths Workshops

The Project Maths Development Team, in conjunction with the NCTE, is running a series of workshops to support the integration of ICT into the teaching of mathematics. These introductory modules focus on the use of software to teach geometry, trigonometry and statistics. They will also include a short introduction to using a laptop with a data projector.

Course duration
This course consists of 5 modules. Each module has been designed to be of 2.5 hours in duration.

Target Audience
These modules are aimed at Post Primary teachers of Mathematics who are interested in integrating ICT within their classroom.

Workshop 1
GeoGebra for Synthetic Geometry
This covers the use of GeoGebra in the teaching of theorems, constructions and transformation geometry for both Junior Cert. and Leaving Cert. from Strand 2.

Workshop 2
GeoGebra for Co-ordinate Geometry:
This covers the use of GeoGebra in the teaching of co-ordinate geometry for both Junior Cert. and Leaving Cert. from Strand 2.

Workshop 3
GeoGebra for Trigonometry plus participants sharing their resources:
This covers the use of GeoGebra in the teaching of trigonometry for both Junior Cert. and Leaving Cert. from Strand 2.

Workshops 4 & 5
Excel for teaching Statistics:
This covers the use of Excel in the teaching of statistics. It will deal with the production of relevant graphs and formulae for both Junior Cert. and Leaving Cert. from Strand 1.

ICT & Languages in the Primary Classroom

Want to know how to use ICT for learning and teaching language in the classroom?

This short course is aimed at helping all primary teachers to gain skills and knowledge around using ICT for learning and teaching all languages, including English, Gaeilge, EAL and modern languages. It focuses on practicalideas for using ICT, software and websites in the language lesson and suits primary teachers swith various levels of ICT skills.

Developed by the Modern Languages in Primary School Initiative (MLPSI) and the National Centre for Technology in Education (NCTE). Available through your local education centre. Fully funded by NCTE.

  • Creating classroom resources

Starting your School’s e-Learning Plan

This course is aimed at principals, ICT co-ordinating teachers and any teachers interested in the development of their school’s e-Learning Plan.

The aim of this 2.5 hour course is to help schools start the process of the development of their e-Learning Plan. The course explains key resources available and advice on how to use them effectively in your school.

Topics covered include:

  • The e-Learning Planning Cycle
  • Using the e-Learning Roadmap
  • Introduction to the e-Learning Action Plan
  • Other NCTE resources available to assist in the development of the Plan.

Participants should bring their school’s e-Learning Handbook to this session.

Using Scoilnet and Online Encyclopaedias

This short 2.5 hour course provides the skills required to find and use educational resources on

*now available to all schools via Scoilnet and the NCTE’s School’s Broadband Network.

A hands on, practical course, participants will have the opportunity to explore these online resources and find out how they can be used to enhance teaching and learning.
