26SUM13 NCSE Summer Course: Introduction to Autism for teachers in Schools Opening their First Autism Class

This course is designed to equip teachers with teaching and learning strategies to meet the needs of autistic learners in individualized and whole class settings.

Anticipated Outcomes

On completion of the course, participants will:

  • Have an in-depth knowledge of the Autism Good Practice Guidance document and the Indicators of Effective Practice, and their alignment with the Looking at Our Schools (2022) document.
  • Have an understanding of theories of autism and how they relate to their practice in the special class.
  • Have an understanding of how language and communication differences impact teaching and learning.
  • Have a range of strategies to understand social differences, sensory and emotional regulation.
  • Have explored the various aspects of the learning environment, including physical layout, task expectations, digital technology and transitions.
  • Have a deeper understanding of preparation for teaching and learning as it pertains to a special class setting.
  • Have a deeper understanding of the links between the Autism Good Practice Guidance Indicators of Effective Practice and the School Self-Evaluation Process

Content:

Day 1: Introduction to Autism
Day 2: Language and Communication and Understanding Social Differences
Day 3: Sensory Regulation and Emotional Regulation
Day 4: Learning Environment and Academic Development
Day 5: Preparation for Teaching and Learning and practical session

Please note this is for teachers in schools opening their first autism class.

If teachers complete this course they do not attend the Introduction to Autism in autumn term.

Approved for EPV days

There is a Centre administration fee of €10.

Before you finalise your booking please note: Where a participant has registered for more than one course, courses may only be completed consecutively rather than concurrently. All our summer courses are booked on the condition that the course fee is non-refundable. Course Fees are not transferrable to another teacher or course. Unfortunately, if you wish to cancel your place on one of our courses or you are unable to attend the course, we are not in a position to refund fees.
